Volvo CE Unveils New Generation of Wheel Loaders with Updated Tech

Volvo CE introduces a new generation of wheel loaders, featuring enhanced efficiency, upgraded cab technology, and improved safety systems, with models launching in 2025.

Volvo Wheel Loaders

Volvo Construction Equipment is introducing a new generation of wheel loaders aimed at improving efficiency, cycle times, operator experience and sustainability across a range of heavy-duty applications. The first five models in the updated series include the L150, L180, L200 High Lift, L220 and L260. They are set to roll out in select markets beginning in 2025.

This launch follows recent overhauls of the company’s articulated haulers and excavator product lines, continuing a trend of integrating modern technologies and digital tools into its equipment.

Productivity and Efficiency Updates

The latest wheel loaders feature load-sensing hydraulics for more responsive lifting and lowering, automatic bucket leveling and a new Auto Bucket Fill function that automates throttle, lift and tilt for consistent material capture.

A new fuel-saving engine mode called Smart Control is now enabled by default, designed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 4%. The loaders are also compatible with HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) fuels, which can lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional diesel.

The machines operate with Volvo’s integrated powertrain system, which synchronizes the transmission, engine, and axles. Upgrades include a higher-torque converter for better low-speed performance, as well as improved gear shifting and braking systems that support faster acceleration and smoother operation.

Other updates include Volvo’s torque parallel linkage system for consistent breakout force across the lifting range, and compatibility with a wide variety of work tools and attachments.

Cab and Operator Features

The redesigned cab focuses on user comfort and ease of operation. Enhancements include increased storage space, improved ergonomics with new armrests, USB ports and a selection of seats. An optional steering lever (Comfort Drive Control) is available for operators seeking to reduce fatigue during long shifts.

In-cab technology has also been updated. A larger 12.8-inch Volvo Co-Pilot touchscreen supports up to four widgets simultaneously and allows for easier control over climate, camera views, and system monitoring. A relocated instrument cluster now sits directly in front of the steering wheel for improved visibility.

Safety and Visibility Enhancements

New safety features improve operator awareness and serviceability. These include:

  • Volvo Smart View for 360-degree visibility
  • An updated collision warning system for reverse operations starting at just 0.3 mph
  • Automatic traction control on select models (L220, L260)
  • A cab that can be tilted to three angles (30°, 60°, 70°) for service access
  • Work lighting and visibility aids like a reversing beacon and rearview camera
  • Service platform upgrades and brake wear indicators

A lockout-tagout (LOTO) battery disconnect switch adds another layer of safety during maintenance.

Digital Tools and Fleet Integration

The new loaders are compatible with a suite of digital systems to support jobsite management and machine performance tracking. These include:

  • Load Assist for onboard weighing, operator coaching and tire pressure monitoring
  • Load Ticket functionality for easier load tracking and invoicing
  • Connected Map, Performance Indicator, and Task Manager for mixed-fleet site coordination
  • ActiveCare® Direct, which offers 24/7 telematics monitoring and performance analytics

The rollout of these models continues Volvo’s focus on equipping machines with data-driven tools and low-emission capabilities suited to evolving fleet requirements.
