Dr. Sesh Commuri, a Gerald Tuma Presidential Professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Electrical Engineering, worked with Volvo Construction Equipment from 2003 to 2015 on development of Density Direct, a system designed to estimate density and stiffness of asphalt pavements during construction. He shares the science behind the technology, which is based in a proprietary artificial neural network that learns as the roller compacts.
