The $165 million federal grant combined with $565 million in private investment by Transurban and CSX Trasnportation and $710 million in state transportation funds will help the state of Virginia carry out some of the biggest projects on the state's transportation wish list, including the "Atlantic Gateway" project which will speed passenger rail, freight trains and highway vehicles through one of the state's most congested corridors on the East Coast.
Other transportation improvements include:
- a new Interstate 95 bridge crossing over the Rappahannock River
- extension of Interstate 395 and I-95 express lanes
- construction of 14 miles of new track along CSX rail corridor
- expansion of mass transit options
